Specialist Learning Program Application

Enrolment process

At Marangaroo Primary School, we follow a structured and transparent process to ensure that each student enrolled in our Specialised Learning Program (SLP) for Autistic Students is well supported and that our program is the right fit for their individual needs.

Step 1: Expression of Interest (EOI)

To begin the process, families are invited to complete and submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) form.
Once the EOI is received, the Program Coordinator begins the eligibility review in line with the Department of Education’s criteria for the Specialised Learning Program.

Step 2: Eligibility Review

Eligibility for the SLP is determined using the following criteria:

  • A multidisciplinary diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), signed by two qualified professionals (e.g. clinical psychologist, speech pathologist or paediatrician)
  • Eligibility for enrolment in a Western Australian public school (Kindergarten to Year 6)
  • A diagnosis without accompanying intellectual impairment
  • The ability to work at or near year-level academic standard with appropriate support
  • Challenges in social, emotional and/or behavioural areas directly related to ASD
  • The ability to independently manage personal care needs

Students who meet these criteria are added to our Expression of Interest (EOI) list for further consideration.

Step 3: Suitability Assessment

The next stage involves a suitability assessment, designed to determine whether the SLP at Marangaroo Primary School can best meet the individual student’s needs.
This process typically takes place during Terms 2 and 3 in preparation for the following school year, however if places become available throughout the school year, a place can be offered.

The suitability assessment may include:

  • Classroom and playground observations
  • Review of academic reports, IEPs, and other relevant documents
  • Questionnaires completed by parents/carers and the student’s current school
  • Consultation with allied health professionals (where applicable)

Once all information is collected, a panel review is conducted to make an informed decision about the program’s suitability for the student.

Step 4: Waitlist and Placement

If the program is deemed suitable for the student, they are placed on our waitlist for their respective year group. When a position becomes available, offers are made to students on our waitlist who best meet our program’s current capacity and composition needs.

Please note that due to limited class numbers, some students may remain on our EOI or waitlist for a period of time until a position becomes available.
